Capacity Building on IP and Access to Diagnostics & Medicines

ITPC has expanded its treatment education efforts to support community expertise in intellectual property and access to diagnostics and medicines.

We conduct regional IP training in EECA, LATCA, and MENA, providing the treatment activists with the fundamental knowledge in intellectual property rights. In 2017, 57 activists were trained on the technical content and entry points to advocate more effectively for access to affordable, quality treatment.

During 2019 ITPC has held Preparedness Workshop for 44 MMA consortium activists from 17 countries on IP issues; also, Patent Opposition Academy (POA) trainings were held for activists, chemists and lawyers from LATCA and EECA regions. In 2021 Asian POA was held in online format for Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and Morocco.

This work – where treatment education and intellectual property overlap – highlights how all three areas of ITPC’s work have strategic synergy.
